Course Description

Beyond the technical aspects, bonsai is first and foremost an art form. In this comprehensive video course, you’ll learn how to interpret a tree, understand its lines, and create a cohesive aesthetic—transforming simple maintenance into a true artistic endeavor.

Through five progressive chapters, this program guides you from theoretical fundamentals to practical application using a real-life example. Specifically, you’ll learn how to:

  • Understanding key aesthetic principles: lines, movement, dynamics, and the use of negative and positive space
  • Apply these concepts to every part of the tree: nebari, trunk, branches, foliage, and deadwood.
  • Analyze different styles (Moyogi, Bunjin, Kengai, etc.) and make consistent choices regarding structure and branches.

The course goes even further with a comprehensive case study: analyzing a mugo pine yamadori, choosing the style and front view, selecting branches, designing the project, and planning its development over time.

An essential course for taking your bonsai practice to the next level—moving beyond simply growing and maintaining a bonsai to learning how to shape it over time with harmony and artistic sensibility.
